Lake Michigan National Monument

If President Bush did it, President Obama can too!
It’s not even 16%.

In 2006 then President Bush took bold executive action and saved 140,000 square miles of ocean by declaring waters near Hawaii to be National Monuments.

“Monument status is quicker; it's more comprehensive; and it's more permanent. Only an act of Congress can undo a monument designation. The sanctuary process, it takes longer; it involves more congressional input, more public debate, more hearings and meetings. And he [George W. Bush] obviously made a decision today to, actually, take a bold step and create something which is going to be immediate, that the law applies immediately to this place now.” Quote by Head of Environmental Programs at the Pew Charitable Trusts Joshua Reichert on the Jim Lehrer News Hour, June 15, 2006

George W. Bush proclaimed the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument on June 15, 2006 (since renamed the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument).

Protecting Lake Michigan’s 22,300 square miles as a Marine National Monument furthers President Obama’s excellent record in designating National Monuments.  22,300 is not even 16% of the140,000 miles that President Bush did!  AND it’s the drinking water for millions on Lake Michigan’s more populated shores, not to mention the fish.

Yes, we can!
